FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – June 20 marks 68 years since a massive tornado, which has since been commonly referred to as the “Fargo Tornado” carved a nine-mile path through Fargo and Moorhead.
This family of Tornadoes began on June 20, 1957 in North Dakota and travelled over 27 miles before crossing into Minnesota for another 25 miles. At it’s widest point, it reached 500 yards across.
12 people were killed in the tornado and 103 were injured, making it the deadliest tornado in North Dakota’s history. It’s also one of only two F5 tornadoes confirmed in the state.
This tornado also led to the establishment of the Fujita Scale, now commonly used to measure tornadoes based on damage they inflict on human-built structures and vegetation.
